Overall Summary
1. What do you like best about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - Faculty involvement with students (weekly Dean's lunches, Dean's breakfasts, etc.) Elective 3rd year program- research project or dual degree pursuit (because we have only 1 year of basic science classes) Primary care mentor program - The one year basic science curriculum People - I think the learning environment created by my classmates and administration is absolutely wonderful. One of the things I have been most impressed with is how much fun I am having here. - We have an accelerated basic science curriculum (which is tough for the first year). This gives us free time during third year for research or another degree. - The people here are fantastic - from the basic science to clincial faculty to administration to the support staff. And the opportunities for early patient contact are great. - All of the faculty have been amazingly supportive and approachable. I have found a few great mentors within the first six months of school. There are many opportunities to be had if you take the initiative. - only one year of basic lectures. third year is independent study.

12. What do you like least about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - Little opportunity to work with underserved populations in THE FIRST YEAR ONLY. There are a few organizations aimed at serving the underserved, but because so many students want to participate, it is only possible to help out 2 or 3 times in one year. During the remaining years, elective experiences with underserved populations are much more possible. - The first year can be stressful, but I think the third year opportunities more than make up for it. - The extremely fast pace of our curriculum leaves very little time for electives or time-consuming outside interests. The price you pay for only 1 year of basic science. - There is a lack of emphasis on primary care and integrative medicine in the curriculum. - no student lounge (temporary)

13. Please share any other thoughts you may have about your school.
Overall Summary
  • - There is a lot of freedom in the curriculum. Even though first year is tough (like anywhere else), things just get better after that. Second year is on the wards, Third year is up to you, and fourth year consists of elective rotations. Most students graduate Duke in four years with either a second degree or published research papers. It is also common to finish fourth year rotations in early spring of 4th year, which makes residency interviews easier. - It's a superb school - I can't imagine myself anywhere else. My classmates are incredible people, and our class atmosphere is very, very friendly and cooperative. This is THE place to go to med school! - Duke has a reputation for its intensive first year program--where two years of basic science are 'crammed' into one. I would just like to say that it is very feasible. I actually have freetime and a social life--I'm enjoying wonderful seventy degree weather in Feb.--AND I will done with classes and be on the wards in six months. It is worth it. As with any program, you just need to work hard and always remember to take time for yourself. - this school is strongest for independent students. bold curriculum (only one year in classroom) works well. school is financially sound.
