Overall Summary
1. What do you like best about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - The closeness of the students, small class size (60), excellent student affairs office, the committment to rural health and primary care, the Kellogg Primary Care Track Program, the accessibility of instructors and the one-on-one relationship with them (no TA's) - Atmosphere of cooperative learning. Competition is not fostered here, in fact, we are constantly advised to work together--it works! - ETSU is situated in the muntains of Tennessee making being a medical student very manageable. The class size is small - 60 student - usually resulting in a close knit group which provides wonderful support as you experience medical school.
  • The campus is beautiful.

12. What do you like least about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - Our Dean of Academic Affairs, unannounced changes in curriculum before matriculation which affected our class (ie-too late to pick another school!) - Politics--they can be found at any med school, but it seems that your best interest may be what you fight for yourself. - Limited resources in areas such as computers and infrastruture. But I understand they have and are currently making improvements.
  • Dr. Franks, the Dean of Medicine is really a despicable character. Unfortunately, his lack of character and his questionable leadership activities has really put a damper on the quality of education at Quillen. On the other hand, Dr. Bagnell - Exec. Assoc. Dean is a very likable person and is genuinely concerned for the wellbeing and education of the students. Unfortunately, his positive attributes are completely overshawdowed by Dr. Franks' lack of integrity.

13. Please share any other thoughts you may have about your school.
Overall Summary
  • - I think my school is an excellent medical school and I would recommend it to anyone. As in all schools, there are administration problems, but even so, this is an excellent place to be for your medical education. - Overall, this is an incredible school that is designed to produce primary care practitioners. We are located in East Tennessee where there are many underserved populations and many opportunities to work with them. We also have a Rural Tract program designed to train students who desire to practice in an underserved area. Across the board, patient interaction begins in the first year with an ongoing preceptorship for about 16 weeks. We always have a very eclectic class--including many nontraditional students who may be older, have other non-medical degrees, who have children/spouses,etc. We work together, look out for each other, and continue to work towards improvements. Also, if outdoors is what you like, then you are in "Appalachian Heaven" with mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, biking, snowboarding, etc. I am thoroughly impressed with the school as a whole. - I recommend ETSU without hesitation --especially if you have a primary care focus!
  • I would highly recommend steering clear of ETSU-QCOM. As a last resort, it will probably give you slightly better match rates than a Caribbean school... but not by much.
