Overall Summary
1. What do you like best about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - Its an incredibly supportive and friendly environment!! - Years 1: Human Anatomy is incredible with only 4 students per cadaver. Dedicated Anatomists for over 26 yrs with UofA! Year2: Phenomenal Pathology Dept teaching with review sessions every month which prepare for USMLE Step 1. Long 8 hour review for Boards 1 week prior. All unpaid work by professors. Has a post-sophomore year where you can work at salary of $14K+ in autopsy and surg. path then complete years 3&4 and graduate with the next class. Year 3&4: may travel to phoenix hospitals. Over 33% of class permanently relocates to phx campus to complete clinical training. Support from U of A is generous and apparent when you meet other med students from Ivy League schools whose med schools do not offer free notes for classes, computer labs with over 250 computers, retreats for 1st years, and organizing all of your test taking for Boards including payments, pictures, etc. Amazing school and well worth it. - u of a really works hard with students to make med school a more enjoyable experience. it has a reputation of "babying" us, which i don't mind at all. - U of A is incredibly supportive of their students. The profs spend alot of extra time with students if they need it to ensure they do well. - Very progressive. Administration is very supportive and protective of students, believes you should graduate with a degree and a life. - My school has incredible student support and opportunities to get involved in just about anything, right from the get go. Additionally, the curriculum and grading is completely non-competitive and meant to foster cooperativity.

12. What do you like least about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - There are a couple of sub-par courses in the first couple of years. - Very little. I felt we had a well-rounded class. The least like attribute was the attitude of clinicians towards UofA med students because they feel that since we are a state-school it is sub-par. - I expected everything (the profs, lectures, books, etc.) to be PERFECT in med school. Although its better than undergrad, I still get frustrated if a mistake is made. (i.e. in our notes or in lecture.) - Sometimes a little too lenient with students who can't cut it academically then can't pass boards. - Despite the level of student involvement in curricular development, there are still some bad instructors and hoops to jump through just like anywhere else. After all, this is medical school!

13. Please share any other thoughts you may have about your school.
Overall Summary
  • - Med Students are really listened to. I.E. for years there has been a dark parking lot outside of the med school and the College of Medicine pushed the UofA administration until they installed a $150,000 lighting system to let us feel safer. - UACOM is a very culturally diverse environment. There are excellent opportunities to work with underserved populations in the Tucson community, which not only gives us patient contact and experience, but gives us a chance to feel as though we are giving something to our community. - Extensive programs with the underserved through Committment to Underserved People (CUP). And Tucson is warm in the winter. - The University of Arizona is an excellent place to attend medical school, but it is only available to Arizona residents and WICHE applicants.
