Overall Summary
1. What do you like best about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - The research opportunities are outstanding, and the school is very flexible regarding time off from medical school to pursue research. - It is a top ranked program with an excellent reputation = success at residency match - The camaraderie is incredible...everyone goes out of his or her way when someone is in need of extra help. It's really amazing. - U of M has a really great curriculum, and the fact that the first year is just Pass/Fail really helped establish a feeling of camaraderie among my classmates. - first year pass/fail grading system & response of administration to student concerns - Excellent facilities and faculty, with a nice mix of good researchers and great teachers. The first year is graded pass/fail. - classmates, dedicated teachers, team-work, Ann Arbor - The students, clinically oriented classes, early exposure to the clinics - So far, I like the way the second year is organized. - Excellent faculty and resident teaching during most of third year. - Teaching by attendings can be very good, however it varies greatly. On some rotations, you get very little attention from attendings, while others clearly enjoy working with medical students. Another problem I have, though it is most likely something that is occurring across the board, is the lack of supervision/feedback early on and the feeling at times that things are being rushed and you are only getting in the way. - Teaching by attendings can be very good, however it varies greatly. 12. What do you like least about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - Michigan is like most other medical schools in that it is struggling to deal with the changing demands on matched specialties as they relate to future funding for the school. Due to those demands, the school is having to put a great deal of emphasis on primary care, when it really lacks the faculty and patient population to do so. - The curriculum is stale and not much focus is placed on the student experience. - Each year the administration collects feedback from the students in order to continually improve our courses. Although I really appreciate their efforts, sometimes it's a bit more difficult to have constant rehauling of classes going on. - The cold. - The students in our class can get competitive at times. However, I think this varies from class to class. - The cold weather - The town. There really isn't much out there if you're not in college. It's really difficult to meet friends outside of medical school. Also, the atmosphere at the school is rather competitive and stressful. Because that is not my personality, I feel out of my element amongst the majority of students here, which, along with the difficulty of making friends outside of school, has thus far contributed to my overall unhappiness with my med school experience. - Lack of exposure to urban/rural underserved populations. Overspecialization of university hospital. - Not the friendliest atmosphere; if you don't fit in right away it is quite easy to become demoralized. Also, Ann Arbor is not the best place to be as a graduate student in one's early twenties, especially if you are looking for a more diverse atmosphere. - Not the friendliest atmosphere; if you don't fit in right away it is quite easy to become demoralized. Overall Summary
  • - Overall, a great school...no medical school is perfect, but this is definitely one of the best. - Students should come here because they want to go to the best they can get into but not because of a good "atmosphere". Ann Arbor is a nice town, too. - This school is absolutely incredible...the opportunities for advancement and exploration of the medical field (and others) are so numerous and widespread, I'm having a phenomenal experience here. In addition, the faculty really encourage students to continue interests outside of medicine, which I respect tremendously! - Amazing school, I have no doubt that I will be an outstanding doctor with my Michigan education - Go someplace else if you aren't the competitive type or if you'd prefer to live someplace a bit more lively. - If you do well here, you will definietly be competitive for any residency you desire. However, if you are not an ultra-competitive type and feel that you need a more supportive atmosphere, you may be better off looking elsewhere. - If you do well here, you will definietly be competitive for any residency you desire.
