Overall Summary
1. What do you like best about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - Extrememly cooperative atmosphere, supportive faculty and attendings, I've had a great education and enjoyed almost every day of it. - Students are given the opportunity for patient contact early and often. - Problem-based learning, pt. interaction within first month of school - Very family friendly; great opportunities to work with practicing clinicians in years 1 and 2 (via continuity clinics and rural externship during the 1st summer). - Early clinical training with live patients and a high degree of responsibility in later clinical years. Small class allows for more personalized contact with faculty who are very accessible. UNM goes out of its way to take care of its students. - The curriculum at UNM is geared toward meeting the needs of New Mexico's population. We have clinical patient exposure within the first semester and continue that throughout the first two years. During the summer after our first year we live in a rural community and work with a family practioner for two months, which is an invaluable experience. Overall, the curriculum has a strong primary care focus that I've greatly appreciated. There is certainly room for those interested in specialty areas as well, but moreso during the third and fourth years.

12. What do you like least about your school?
Overall Summary
  • - The administration can be somewhat unorganized which can drive us anal-retentive types crazy. The curriculum changes often and I had to do a fair amount of independent preparation for Step I. - The curriculum is constantly changing. Tutorial based learning is often a poor substitute for classical learning, particularly when it comes to USMLE Step 1. - Timing of Step 1 and Step 2; we tend to take them after most of the nation. Especially for Step 1, this timing prevents the basic sci from being fresh in your mind, since we have been 1 year out of the classroom before we take Step 1. - Year 3 is full of in class lectures on random (sometimes not pertinent) topics which results in enormous time away from the clinical rotation itself, making you feel quite out of touch with your patients. - Limited didactics to prepare for Step 1. Weaker in basic sciences. - UNM could stand to improve some of its facilities for students. There is no student lounge per say, which is much needed. There are recreational facilities, such as a gym and basketball court, but these are small and utilized greatly. The actual classroom facilities are good but the laboratories are dated and need some renovation. Clinical skills training rooms are okay, but again could stand to be updated.

13. Please share any other thoughts you may have about your school.
Overall Summary
  • - One of the least expensive schools in the country. - Overall a very good school. The staff is extremely friendly and the administration really listens to students. - Strong in terms of clinical training but weaker in basic sciences. Graduates will do well clinically. Preparation for step 1 leans more towards independent learning. - UNM is an excellent school overall in my experience. The faculty are friendly and approachable in general. The administration seems to have a genuine interest in student well-being and they're also quite approachable.
